Edward Caswell, Choral Conductor

Edward Caswell is a choral conductor, singer and singing teacher.

Edward went to Christ Church, Oxford, and the Royal College of Music where he studied singing with Norman Bailey.  At the age of eighteen his made his conducting debut with Haydn’s Nelson Mass in Oxford and won the Choral Conducting Prize at the Royal College of Music in 1991.  He later studied privately with Edward Brooks and Robert Dean. 

Since moving to Scotland in 2003, Edward has established himself as a widely respected choral conductor having previously worked as a singer in particular with the Monteverdi Choir, BBC Singers and as a member of English National Opera. 

Edward appears regularly as a guest chorus master throughout the UK and in Germany, and holds the posts of Musical Director of St Andrews Chorus and the Wordsworth Singers.  He is a director of the Paisley Choral Festival and as a teacher works in the Department of Vocal Studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and at the University of Glasgow.

During 2006/7 Edward worked as chorus master and conductor with NDR Chor, preparing them for Miniata by Rebecca Saunders and recording a programme of music by Tallis, Byrd and Gibbons.  Edward returned to Germany in August 07 to conduct the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Chor in a programme of works by Lassus, Szokolay, Kodály, Ligeti and MacMillan to critical acclaim2007 concluded with performances of Messiah in St Andrews and with Dundee Choral Union and the Scottish Ensemble in the Caird Hall

Edward is a regular member of Cappella Nova for whom he is also Outreach Director.  In this role he leads workshops across Scotland, including a recent series on the liturgical music of James MacMillan and performances with the Scottish Plainsong Choir.
